Qimin Academy of Qingdao Agricultural University specializes in the history and cultures of agriculture in China.
The name “Qimin” is apparently borrowed from the book “Qimin Yaoshu (Fundamental Skills of Qimin)”, a worldrenowned classic
in agriculture completed during the early 6th century. Originally, “Qimin” means the plebeians or common people. Nowadays, people
who read the name would be more likely to link the term to the ancient Qi kingdom in northern China. And all these suits well with the
Academy, which aims at the education and spread of Chinese traditional culture: plowing fields and reading the books, being free from
the conceivable enslavement by the modern technology feared by some outstanding scientists, and to live harmoniously with the
nature and build a better world.
Qimin Academy consists of two research centers:
the Research Center of Classic Writings in Agriculture
and
the Research Center of Chinese Traditional Culture,
headed by Wang Baoqing and Xiu Caibo respectively. There are two dozens of members now. Their study interests range from the
classic writingsin agriculture, the farming culture in China, to Chinese traditional culture, local records and chronicles. The
Academy is planning series of lectures and cooperations with other academic organizations.
Prof. Cheng Yuhai and Wang Wei serve as the honorary deans, Mu Shaoyan the dean in charge, Wang Xiaofang, Mu Qianwei, Xiu Caibo and Wang Baoqing the assistant deans.
Through purchase and donation, the Academy has set a store of books on Chinese history, culture, and agriculture.
There are regular communications with other academic organizations such as China AgriHistory Association and others.
The establishment of Qimin Academy will further reinforce the research, education and spread of the Chinese legacy,
especially, of the agriculture civilization. It will certainly be conducive to the buildingup of a multidisciplinary,
pragmatic agricultural university with high standards, and contribute to the quality education of students with
practical agricultural skills.
